First Artist Daria Stanciulescu is one of dancers taking on the role of Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty this season and appears on the poster for our performances. Here she shares her interpretation of this quintessential ballet villain.
‘Carabosse is one of my favourite roles to play,’ she says. ‘For me she isn’t all that angry and horrible - I see her as elegant, classy, sassy, powerful and with just a slight superior air.’
‘She is a diva and I enjoy so much playing around with her different layers. I think her main quality is simply being different from all the rest.’
Romanian-born Daria joined BRB in 2014 and has played plenty of character roles including the Roast Swan in Sir David Bintley’s Carmina burana and the Stepmother in Sir David’s Cinderella.
‘I usually do a lot of acting roles and the fact that the role of Carabosse is a combination of dancing, acting and miming makes the role extremely enjoyable and easier to become the character itself,’ she says. ‘The balance of them all comes to me most naturally and Carabosse is easier to portray, in a way, than all the other character roles in which the dancing movements are limited.’
And Daria believes Carabosse has real charisma.
‘I think the audience love to hate an evil character and, with her dark striking appearance, she gets them totally on her side. She is the outcast of the ceremony and that’s the reason why she takes revenge - in style.’
