Nine film-making students from Birmingham City University (BCU) have created a documentary, revealing the behind-the-scenes process of staging Don Quixote.
The film takes viewers on a fascinating journey, exploring all the intricacies and formidable logistics that go into the creation of a large-scale ballet production, and features interviews with Carlos Acosta and Don Quixote designer, Tim Hatley among others. Viewers will also enjoy a rare glimpse of the work of a range of creatives, technicians, producers and administrators, vital to the creation of a major new ballet production.
The students are in their final year on the BA (Hons) Filmmaking course at the school of Games, Film and Animation at BCU, and this bold initiative has offered them very rare behind-the-scenes access to Birmingham Royal Ballet during the creation of the Company’s first major full-length ballet from Director Carlos Acosta.
The initiative was devised jointly by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Creative Digital Producer, Tom Rogers, and BCU’s Course Director on the BA (Hons) Filmmaking and the MA in Feature Film Development, Shaun Mager.
This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to work on a wonderful live project, with this world-renowned ballet company. Our students have had the opportunity to work within their chosen specialisms as Producers, Directors, Directors of Photography, Camera Operators, Sound Recordists and Editors, and together, they have crafted a unique documentary with rare behind-the-scenes access that plots the key stages of the life of a production.Shaun Magher
