Yi Wei

Yi Wei is a Chinese conductor and currently is the Constant Lambert Fellow at the Birmingham Royal Ballet and Royal Ballet for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

Yi recently made his debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra as a guest conductor, and in his conducting career, he also has conducted professional symphony orchestras, such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Northern Ballet Sinfonia, NEW Sinfonia, the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland and Orchestra Academia China.

He has a keen interest in contemporary music and has appeared in workshops and recording sessions with Manchester’s professional contemporary music ensemble, Psappha. and he has collaborated with leading composers such as Simon Holt, Emily Howard, Bethan Morgan Williams, etc.

As an assistant conductor, Yi has also served in programs at the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and at the 2021 BBC Proms with the BBC National Orchestra of Wale, where he worked with Sir Andrew Davis, Andrew Manze, Antony Hermus, Ben Gernon, Carlo Goldstein, Julian Rachlin and Clark Rundell.

Yi obtained his postgraduate degree in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music under the guidance of Mark Heron and Clark Rundell between 2020-2022 where he achieved one of the highest final recital scores ever, and was awarded the Brierley / Kershaw Prize. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Conducting from the China Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Youqing Yang.

He had masterclasses with Martin Brabbins at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with Omer Meir Wellber at the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, with Barry Wordsworth and Jonathan Lo at the Northern Ballet Sinfonia, with Antony Hermus at Opera North, with Sir Mark Elder, Ludovic Morlot and Domingo Hindoyan at RNCM, and with Alexander Polishchuk, Guido Johannes Rumstadt, Shao En, Claire Levacher, Peter Stark and Mark Gibson at the China Conservatory of Music.
