George Williamson
George Williamson made his Birmingham Royal Ballet debut in 2018 with Embrace, a Ballet Now commission.
Born in Worcestershire, George trained first at Elmhurst Ballet School, Birmingham, and English National Ballet School, which is where his choreographic work began. Whilst at English National Ballet School George won the Choreographic Competition for three consecutive years and the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT Award. Ballets created included Round the Corner in 2009, which was presented at the Peacock Theatre and the City of London Festival. In 2010 he created Ana-Chro-Po for English National Ballet School’s summer performance.
Upon graduation in 2010, George joined Polish National Ballet under the Artistic Direction of Krzysztof Pastor, where he danced a variety of classical and contemporary roles. He continued to pursue his choreography, creating his ballet Animus for the company creation series in 2011. Whilst at Polish National Ballet, George was invited by Wayne Eagling to choreograph a new production of Firebird for English National Ballet. Firebird was George’s first professional commission, which received its world premiere at the London Coliseum in March 2012. George was then invited to New English Ballet Theatre, where he created a new piece entitled Threefold. My First Cinderella premiered at the Peacock Theatre on 27th March 2013, presented by English National Ballet and English National Ballet School.
In 2013 George received a nomination for the Benois de la Danse Award for his production of Firebird and also created Tempus for The Queen’s Coronation Festival in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace, followed by Dawn Dances for Dutch National Ballet’s Junior Company. George was a Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative 2014 finalist. In 2015 he created three new ballets for Constella Ballet & Orchestra, which were performed at Sadler’s Wells Lilian Baylis Theatre, followed by the world premiere of My First Ballet: Swan Lake with ENB. Also in 2015, George choreographed his first full-length ballet, Egle Queen of the Grass Snakes, for Lithuanian National Ballet. In 2016 George created Strangers for New English Ballet Theatre, My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty for English National Ballet, Murmuration for American Ballet Theatre Studio Company and CRANE for Dutch National Ballet, which was premiered as part of their acclaimed Transatlantic programme.
In spring 2017 George won the Genesis International Choreography Competition at Milwaukee Ballet with his new ballet, Wonderers.
