Jean Bedells
Born in Bristol, Jean Bedells trained first with her mother, Phyllis Bedells, the first renowned English ballerina. She gained a scholarship to the Vic-Wells Ballet School. She spent ten years with Vic-Wells Ballet, the last four as assistant ballet mistress and ballet mistress. In 1948 she left to be with her husband and raise a family. She was an RAD major examiner for 30 years, for 20 a member of the executive committee. She was involved in The Royal Ballet's touring company's staging of Job in the early 1970s and worked with Alexander Grant on Ballet for All's The Birth of The Royal Ballet. She re-created The Gods go a'Begging for the Royal Ballet School in 1972 and worked with London City Ballet on a later revival. In 1987 she revived Ashton's Apparitions for Festival Ballet. She worked with BRB on its revival of Job, and staged de Valois' The Prospect before Us.
