A Perry Barr Arts Championship project, 2012

Between January and March 2012, Birmingham Royal Ballet worked in partnership with dna3d dance company to deliver Celebrate; a participatory dance project with three groups of senior citizens from Perry Barr. The three participating groups were St Mark’s Church Day Centre in Kingstanding, Perry Locks Nursing Home in Perry Barr and the Golden Age Forum in Handsworth.

This unique project aimed to engage participants in ballet inspired movement through a series of eight workshops using the theme of celebration and taking the format and structure of classical ballet story-telling to explore this theme. Participants shared with us their fascinating stories about things they had celebrated throughout their lives from street parties, jubilees, cruises, weddings and centenary birthdays! Workshops focused on carefully facilitated physical activity that aimed to extend movement and enhance overall wellbeing.

It was a hugely enjoyable project to be a part of, to share in the great many experiences of the people we worked with and to eat plenty of cake! We hope to continue the relationships with these groups in future projects.

‘It’s been absolutely amazing; watching them come alive basically. It was wonderful , an experience that will stay in our memories forever’ Lesley Lacey, Activities Organiser, Perry Locks Nursing Home

‘It has meant a lot to me. I have a lot of energy and I’ve met people that I would not have if it was not for the project’ Gloria Taylor, participant
