Blessed Robert Johnson College - Arts Award Day at Birmingham Royal Ballet

In February 2013 15 dance students from Blessed Robert Johnson Catholic College spent two intensive days at Birmingham Royal Ballet studios working with Manager for Learning and former Company dancer Jenny Murphy to choreograph their own performance piece based around Aladdin.

The students ranged in age from 13 to 18 and included those studying Silver and Gold Arts Awards. The workshops were designed to fulfil modules within each of the Arts Awards –namely the Arts Challenge for Silver and working with advanced practitioners for Gold.

Over the two days, students were given unique insights into the Company with a behind-the-scenes tour and a pre-show talk from Artist Laura Davenport. They were also given a rare glimpse into a dancer’s daily training when they went to watch Company Class.

The practical workshops focused on developing dance technique and performance skills and by the end of their time with us the students had successfully choreographed a five-minute piece inspired by the jewel- and desert-wind sections of Aladdin. The piece will be performed at the college’s annual dance production.

The project even attracted attention from the local media, appearing in the Telford Journal.

'I have gained a great sense of satisfaction and pride in my students’ progress and achievement, and an enhancement of my understanding which will help with my own teaching.' Diane Whiting, Head of Dance

'I thought it was amazing and the teacher and pianist were great!' A student
