Freefall: January, 2012
Since Freefall’s annual performance at the MAC as part of Birmingham’s Artsfest in September, the company has been in an intensive planning and creating period in preparation for 2012, a year that promises to be very busy, challenging and exciting.
In January, the company are performing at The Schools Network Conference at Warwick University and will be leading a session titled Students as Community artists.
In February, for the third year running, they will be working with 3rd year PGCE PE students from Birmingham University’s School of Education. This workshop aims to support the students in developing their interest in dance, and equip them with additional skills and approaches to using it in their forthcoming teaching careers.
Shortly after this Freefall will be performing at Fox Hollies School at a ‘Friends’ of Fox Hollies fundraising event.
Freefall and We Dance – 2012
March sees the start of We Dance - a partnership project between MAC, MENCAP and Freefall Dance Company. Funded by Dancing for the Games and part of the Cultural Olympiad, We Dance is a grassroots-level dance project for people with a learning disability (pwld) in Birmingham and the surrounding region. It is intended to extend the opportunities for pwld to dance, be creative, communicate, challenge perceptions, and improve their health and sense of well being. It will include a two-day performance and workshop festival held at MAC in July, an extensive dance workshop programme including CPD for regional Dance Artists, two dance for camera films and a specially commissioned new Olympic themed work created and performed by Freefall Dance Company.
Freefall have been key in the development of this project with Freefall Dancers Paul Pedley and Nikitta Malins supporting the programming on the Steering Committee. A project blog page will be launched shortly for ongoing updates on the new commission.
