2007-08 comes to a closeJuly 14, 2008 Birmingham Royal Ballet's 2007-08 season came to a close this weekend with final performances of Giselle at the Lowry Theatre, Salford. The Company's Chief Executive, Christopher Barron, spoke today of the past 12 months, describing them as the 'busiest, but most rewarding season in recent history'. 'The sheer volume of performances this year have clearly shown the drive and ambition that exists within the Company right now. 2007-08 saw us embark on some of our biggest national and international tours for a long time, tours which saw the Company present a remarkable amount of repertory, in a variety of dance styles. We have been proud to be able to represent Birmingham in the UK and abroad, and cement our commitment to a city which has supported us so much.' Nearly 125,000 tickets were sold world-wide for Birmingham Royal Ballet's performances this year. The Company performed over 20 pieces in fewer than 12 months, in over a dozen different venues. Speaking of the variety of pieces the Company had performed, Director David Bintley said: 'Ballets like Swan Lake are not just standards that pay the rent, they're great, great ballets, and they're part of this Company's history. They're performed world-wide, and I suppose if the critics are playing the comparison game, then you are matching yourself against the very best that the world has to offer. And let's face it, there are a number of companies in this world that perform classics like these exclusively, so there should be some stiff competition out there. 'But the fact that we can perform these traditional classical ballets to such a high standard, and then the following night present an entire programme of jazz ballets - and look as good as an American company who perform nothing but that classical jazz style - is a measure not just of our versatility, but of the style of company that we are.' Soloist Natasha Oughtred, who joined Birmingham Royal Ballet at the start of the 2007-08 season, spoke of her first year with the Company in a recent interview. 'I think that's something that's really hit me here: in class everyone's giving it their all right up to the end, regardless of the busy-ness of the day we have ahead. Everyone's always full-throttle and it kind of sweeps you along and carries you through, so it's very easy to get on board with that!' Tickets for all dates on Birmingham Royal Ballet's 2008 autumn tour are on sale, with details available at www.brb.org.uk/whatson. Tickets for all 2008-09 shows at Birmingham Hippodrome are also already on sale, with full dates and details of subscription packages available at www.brb.org.uk/2008-09. ENDS |
